LAURIE AMAT, improvisational vocalist and performer, explores the vast possibilities of human sound, focusing on the power of pure voice, breath and body as an instrument to convey a direct expression of human emotion. She produces sounds ranging from angel voices to skin peeling multiphonic cacophony and occasionally, the glorious Theremin. Her Roman Catholic childhood upbringing and her first resonant space performance at 17 in Pisa’s Bapistry of St. John, influenced her very strongly. Her fearless vocal exploration combined with this perspective makes for sound performance which moves beyond technical ability, and breaks the boundaries of performance through personal connection and mutual experience.
